WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BUTTERFLIES?

Butterflies belong to the order Lepidoptera, which means “scale-winged” in Greek.

They are known for the striking beauty of their wings, which are covered in tiny scales that reflect the sunlight to create brilliant colors and patterns.

Butterflies have a fascinating life cycle that includes four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult.

The female butterfly lays her eggs on a specific type of plant that will provide food for the caterpillar once it hatches. The caterpillar undergoes several molts as it grows, and eventually forms a chrysalis or cocoon in which it undergoes metamorphosis into the adult butterfly.

The entire life cycle can take several weeks to several months, depending on the species and environmental conditions.

Butterflies also play an important role in pollination, as they visit flowers to feed on nectar and in the process transfer pollen from one flower to another.

This helps to ensure the continuation of plant species. Some butterflies are also important indicators of environmental health, as their presence or absence can indicate changes in habitat quality or the effects of climate change.

Like all insects, butterflies have a head, thorax, abdomen, two antennae and six legs. In addition, butterflies have four wings that are almost always covered by coloured scales.

Some interesting butterfly facts include:

  • The largest butterfly in the world is the Queen Alexandra’s birdwing, which can have a wingspan of up to 12 inches.
  • The second largest butterfly in the world is the Goliath Birdwing (ornithoptera goliath), which has a wingspan of up to 28cm.
  • The smallest butterfly in the world is the western Pygmy Blue.
  • Research shows that butterflies doesn’t need all of that wingspan, their wings are so massive they can fly even when half of their wing cut off.
